Unsubscribed

A few days ago, I noticed I was still paying for a meditation app I hadn’t opened in months (that’s a lie, definitely years!).
It was one of those sneaky little charges, $5.99 a month—small enough to ignore, noticeable enough to feel mildly betrayed by my past self.
So I canceled it. And honestly, it felt amazing.
But not for the reason you’d think. It wasn’t the $5.99 (although yes, every dollar counts). It was because I realized I’m tired of saying yes to things I didn’t actually choose.
That’s what this week is really about: a giant unsubscribe.
Not just from apps or email lists, but from expectations I never signed up for. From beliefs I didn’t mean to carry. From the pressure to always be doing more—or else feel like I’m falling behind.
Exhibit A: The Subscription Spiral
You sign up for a 7-day free trial of productivity, meditation, language learning, budgeting (insert your vice).
You forget about it.
It bills you.
You forget about it again.
Repeat until you’re paying $300 a year to “improve yourself,” but haven’t opened the apps since 2022.
Exhibit B: The Optimization Overload
Every day has to be maximized. Every dollar has to be tracked. Every moment must be productive or else—what? You’ve failed?
Somewhere along the way, rest became radical. And stillness started to feel like falling behind.
Exhibit C: The Plan Paralysis
Having no plan is not the same as having no direction. But if you’ve ever spiraled because you didn’t have a five-year vision by Tuesday morning, you’re not alone.
We confuse structure with control. And control with safety. And safety with self-worth.
Lately, we’ve been talking a lot about the things we carry, financially and emotionally. And how easy it is for the little stuff to pile up.
Habits. Subscriptions. Obligations. Guilt.
On their own, they seem small. But together? They get heavy.
So this week, I’m unsubscribing from:
- the pressure to optimize every dollar
- the guilt when I slow down
- the need to always have a “plan” for everything
Because clarity isn’t always about knowing what to add.
Sometimes, it’s about what you let go of.
That’s a kind of financial freedom too. Maybe even a more important one.
Now it’s your turn — what’s one thing you’re ready to unsubscribe from this week?
I’ll go first: that meditation app.
And the pressure to reply to emails instantly.
Sometimes I just need 5—maybe even 30—minutes to gather my thoughts.
Let it go. It feels amazing.
Then go get that overpriced iced coffee. You’ve earned it.
